The Spa Traveller Review · Lake Garda
Janet Brice discovers a modern Italian “lemon house” above Lake Garda, where a vast spa, infinity-pool views and an East-meets-West treatment philosophy make getting happily lost part of the pleasure.
Editor’s Picks
- Best for: a spa-first Italian escape with remarkable lake views.
- Signature feeling: quiet scale—there is always another pool, sauna or relaxation space to discover.
- Stay for: at least two nights if the spa is the purpose of the journey.
- Know before you go: Gargnano sits on Lake Garda’s western shore; build road-transfer time into the itinerary.
Happily lost above Lake Garda
I pride myself on my sense of direction. Yet after travelling through the spa for what felt like the seventh time—between pools, saunas, treatment rooms and places designed simply for doing nothing—I realised I was utterly and happily lost.
Lefay Resort & SPA Lago di Garda occupies a hillside above the lake, surrounded by woodland and olive groves. The architecture takes its cue from the region’s historic limonaie: long, terraced lemon houses positioned to capture the southern light. The result is a low-slung resort that follows the landscape rather than competing with it.
“The view stops you mid-stride—but it is the sense of space inside the spa that encourages you to stay.”
The spa: expansive, but considered
The current Lefay SPA extends across approximately 3,800 square metres. Scale alone is not what makes it memorable. Its appeal lies in the progression from warmer, more sociable water spaces to quieter areas where light, temperature and scent gently change the pace of the day.
The Lefay SPA Method draws on classical Chinese medicine while incorporating Western research and contemporary spa practice. Guests can choose individual treatments or explore longer programmes, but the resort works just as well when the itinerary is kept simple: swim, rest, walk, eat and choose one treatment thoughtfully.
The Spa Traveller tip
Do not book every hour. Allow time after a treatment for the relaxation spaces and the heated pool overlooking the lake; they are part of the experience, not merely somewhere to wait.
A treatment I still remember
My deep-tissue massage combined warm volcanic stones with botanical oils. What stayed with me was not a dramatic promise of transformation but the quality of the therapist’s touch, the unhurried rhythm and the way the relaxation area extended the treatment rather than ending it abruptly.
Treatments and product partners change, so readers should discuss pressure, preferences and relevant health information during consultation rather than relying on an old treatment name.
Food with a lighter touch
Lefay Vital Gourmet connects the restaurant experience with the resort’s broader wellness philosophy. This is still recognisably Italian food: pleasure and presentation matter. The lighter approach is most convincing when it feels like hospitality, not a prescribed regime.

The verdict
Lefay Lago di Garda feels luxurious because it gives the guest space: physical space, visual space and time to decide how much—or how little—to do. The views may draw you outside, but the spa makes a compelling case for staying exactly where you are.
