The Spa Traveller Review · Ontario
David Rhodes heads into the Ontario countryside in search of something increasingly rare: enough physical space, quiet and unstructured time to put the phone away without wondering what he is missing.
Editor’s Picks
- Best for: travellers who need a gentle change of pace rather than a punishing “detox”.
- The setting: countryside, gardens and trails near Grafton, Ontario.
- The rhythm: meals, spa time, water, walking and classes—without a complicated itinerary.
- Important: a digital detox is a personal choice here, not an enforced no-device policy.
Looking for space to switch off
I wanted a digital detox and a spa with space—somewhere my attention would not immediately be filled by another screen, schedule or decision. Ste. Anne’s Spa in Ontario offered exactly the conditions I needed.
The retreat sits in the countryside outside Grafton, east of Toronto. Stone buildings, gardens, trails and long views begin to soften the pace before treatment or thermal ritual enters the picture.
“The most convincing digital detox was not a rule. It was discovering that the place beyond the screen was more interesting than the screen itself.”
A digital detox without theatre
Ste. Anne’s does not need to confiscate a phone to make disconnection possible. I found it more useful to set my own rules: the device stayed out of reach during meals, walking, treatments and the final hour before sleep. That simple boundary stopped the retreat becoming another project to manage.
The space left behind filled naturally. There were gardens and trails to explore, wellness classes to consider, leisurely meals and hydrotherapy facilities that rewarded staying put rather than rushing on.
The Spa Traveller digital-detox plan
- Tell important contacts when you will next check messages.
- Disable work notifications before arrival.
- Keep the phone outside the treatment and dining experience.
- Choose two short check-in windows if complete disconnection is unrealistic.
- Use a paper notebook for thoughts you do not want to lose.
The spa experience
On my visit, a deep-tissue massage was followed by warmth, water and a long, unhurried pause. What mattered most was not an extravagant treatment claim; it was the absence of pressure to move immediately to the next thing.
The current resort offering includes spa treatments, wellness classes, trails and gardens, hydrotherapy pools, steam rooms and saunas. Exact inclusions depend on the day or overnight package, so compare what is covered before booking.
What Ste. Anne’s does particularly well
- Space: the rural setting creates genuine separation from the city.
- Ease: all-inclusive-style packages reduce the number of decisions during the stay.
- Variety: water, treatments, movement and outdoor time offer alternatives to scrolling.
- Permission: the atmosphere makes doing less feel like the purpose rather than a failure to use every facility.
Who will enjoy it?
Ste. Anne’s is likely to suit solo travellers, friends and couples who value a relaxed country-house atmosphere over a highly clinical wellness programme. It may be less appropriate for someone seeking intensive diagnostics or a rigid retreat timetable.

The verdict
Ste. Anne’s gave me what I had hoped to find: not a dramatic cure for modern life, but enough distance to notice how often I reached for a device without needing it. The lasting luxury was attention returned to the place, the people and the day in front of me.
