The Spa Traveller Review · Northern Ireland
Penny McCormick learns how to slow down at Galgorm in County Antrim, where a 24-hour escape revolves around riverside bathing, thermal gardens and the useful luxury of spending most of the stay in a robe.
Editor’s Picks
- Best for: a high-impact one- or two-night spa break without leaving the UK.
- Signature: a large indoor-and-outdoor Thermal Village arranged across four gardens.
- Spa & Golf: Galgorm Castle Golf Club and golf-stay options make this one of TST’s strongest dual-interest resorts.
- Know before you go: spa access, dining and treatment inclusions differ by package; compare them before paying.
Twenty-four hours in a robe
Spending a day in a fluffy bathrobe is my idea of luxury. At Galgorm, set beside the River Maine in County Antrim, it becomes a perfectly sensible itinerary rather than an indulgent afterthought.
The resort has grown well beyond the traditional hotel-spa formula. The Thermal Village is the centre of gravity: heated and cool experiences, indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, saunas, a snow cabin, salt cave, relaxation spaces and places to pause for food or a drink.
“The luxury is not one treatment; it is having enough space and enough choice to let the day find its own rhythm.”
How to use the Thermal Village
The current spa is arranged across Riverside, Forest, Alpine and Walled gardens. That scale can tempt guests to collect facilities. A better approach is to choose a simple circuit: begin with gentle warmth, swim or rest, try one cooler experience if appropriate, then leave enough time to settle before lunch or a treatment.
Galgorm describes detoxification and purification among its thermal traditions. Readers should understand these as spa language, not a promise that heat or cold removes toxins or treats disease. Hydration, comfort and individual contraindications matter more than completing every experience.
More than a spa break
The surrounding County Antrim landscape adds genuine depth. Screen locations associated with Game of Thrones remain a popular touring angle, but the stronger reason to stay is the combination of river, woodland, restaurants and enough on-site activity to make two nights feel worthwhile.
Golf gives Galgorm unusual commercial and editorial strength. The resort promotes golf stays and access to Galgorm Castle Golf Club, while notable links courses can be added to a wider Northern Ireland itinerary. Spa access and tee times should still be booked separately unless a current package explicitly combines them.
Who will love it?
- Couples wanting a short UK spa break with substantial facilities.
- Friends who prefer sociable bathing and dining to a silent retreat.
- Golfers and non-golfers sharing the same trip.
- First-time spa guests who like clear choices rather than a clinical programme.
Before you book
- Confirm Thermal Village entry times and whether early arrival or late access is included.
- Reserve treatments and restaurants ahead for weekends.
- Check age restrictions for the chosen spa period.
- For a spa-and-golf break, verify transfer time and tee-time conditions separately.

The verdict
Galgorm succeeds because the spa is large enough to be the purpose of the journey, while golf, food and County Antrim make it easy to travel with someone whose ideal day looks different from yours.
